Glen Maxey, executive director for the Texas Democratic Party, has announced how senate districts will select their representatives to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore. To ensure a transparent and inclusive experience at our upcoming state convention, we want to make sure all candidates for national delegate understand how elections will take place for the four Senate District 11 national delegates who will be elected June 17 at the state Democratic convention. Plans are tentative and subject to change, but notification of any changes will be timely.
Early voting for the Democratic Primary Runoff will last for only five weekdays, Monday, May 16 - Friday, May 20. Harris County voters may cast ballots at any early voting location with the county during the runoff. The nearest location for most Clear Lake area voters is the Freeman Branch Library at 16616 Diana Ln., Houston 77062. Voting hours each day are 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.
At the April 13 Bay Area New Democrats meeting, the club voted to endorse several candidates in the Tuesday, May 24 Democratic Primary runoff. The candidate screening committee recommended the candidates found to be most qualified. Most, but not all, will appear on the ballots in area precincts. The endorsed candidates are:
Texas Railroad Commissioner - Cody Garrett
District Judge, 61st Judicial District - Julie Countiss
District Judge, 111th Judicial District - Kristen Hawkins
District Judge, 215th Judicial District - JoAnn Storey
Democratic voters in the area will return to the polls for the primary runoff in each still-contested race for the party nomination on Tuesday, May 24. Please see harrisvotes.com to find your Election Day polling place. Sites used for early voting will be used again on May 24 but not in the same way. Usually, during early voting, voters can cast ballots at any early voting site within the county. While those sites will be in use again, voters will have to go only where their precincts are consolidated, usually at the closest spot used for early voting, but not necessarily.
Sign-in for the Senate District 11 convention this Saturday, March 19 begins at 9 a.m. at the IBEW Hall at 4345 Allen Genoa Rd. in Pasadena. To pre-register for the convention, visit register.txdemocrats. Because Texas Democratic Party rules have changed, what was once the Primary-night precinct caucus no longer exists. Now precinct chairs will be in charge of their caucuses that take place on the same day and at the same place as the Senate District Convention.
Following the Nevada caucus, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will travel to Houston on Saturday, Feb. 20 for a free, public Get Out the Vote Rally to encourage supporters to vote early and to vote in the March 1 Texas Primary. The event will be 6:45 - 10 p.m. at the Recreation Wellness Center on the Texas Southern University campus, 3100 Cleburne St., Houston, TX 77004.
