Necessity is the plea for every infringment of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slave. - William Pitt

Our 2008 Democratic Candidates
More Candidates will be added at a later date.

Rick Noriega, (http://www.ricknoriega.com) a five-term Democratic state lawmaker, formally began his bid to unseat Senator John Cornyn, making it clear that he would use his stature as a National Guard officer to criticize the Iraq war. "We are in an occupation of a country currently," Mr. Noriega said. "The American people are tired of being misled and misinformed." Mr. Noriega, a lieutenant colonel in the Texas Army National Guard, spent 14 months in Afghanistan.

Rick felt compelled to answer the call and serve in the U.S. Army in the wake of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. He was an airborne school and service commander of the 143rd Infantry Detachment (Long-Range Surveillance), an aide to Brigadier General David Heuer, and aide-de-camp to General Samuel Turk, Adjutant General of the Texas Army National Guard. But Rick's service in the Army did not end there.

He became a Lieutenant Colonel in the Texas Army National Guard, and served as deputy garrison commander of the KMTC training facility in Kabul, Afghanistan after 9/11. Rick was deployed in Afghanistan for a total of 14 months until August 2005, and he was also the Laredo Border Sector Commander in Operation Jump Start during the summer of 2006.

Upon his return from Afghanistan, Rick was tapped by Mayor Bill White as Incident Commander of Houston's Hurricane Katrina relief efforts at the George R. Brown Convention Center. His leadership with the military, as well as his record in community service, was crucial as the GRB was transformed into a virtual city that cared for nearly 30,000 evacuees, and was then dismantled in the course of less than a month. At the center, Rick coordinated medical, employment, travel, housing and food services for more than 2,000 evacuees living on-site.

Congressman Nick Lampson (http://www.lampson.com) For over 30 years, I have had the privilege of working for the people of Southeast Texas. I started as a teacher at a public high school and later became a county elected official. Now, I'm honored to serve you in the U.S. House of Representatives. When I took office again in January 2007, our nation and our Congress were in desperate need of moving forward after a long era of tumultuous scandals and bitter partisanship. While there are still many challenges ahead, I'm proud to say that I've accomplished a lot simply by reaching across the aisle and supporting a bipartisan legislative agenda.

It's important to have a leader whom you can trust--a leader who will be a staunchly independent voice for families in TX-22.

The simple reality is that I am not a Washington "player", and I am not a bitter partisan. I have committed my life to serving my neighbors. I am a Blue Dog who fights hard for fiscal discipline. I stand my ground to improve ethics in Washington. I think your Representative should not have a pay raise until the budget is balanced. And I'm proud to have a long list of accomplishments in a short period of time. Send me back to Congress, and I will continue to work hard every day for the people of District 22 and no one else.

Joe Jaworski, (http://jaworskifortexas.com) Independent Leadership for a New Direction Joe Jaworski combines a celebrated family tradition of public service with a deep faith in the power of individuals to make a positive difference in their communities.

Jaworski served three terms on the Galveston City Council, where he earned a reputation for insisting on strict financial accountability to hold the line on new taxes while safeguarding vital services. First elected in 2000, he was re-elected in 2002 and then again in 2004 as Mayor Pro-Tem. He stepped down in May 2006 under the city's term limits law.

In 2005, Jaworski helped lead the team that faced Hurricane Rita and won praise for his role in that region's emergency preparation and response to the devastating storm.

Born in Houston on the day Texas prepared to mark its 126th year of independence, Jaworski earned his bachelor's from North Carolina's Davidson College and his law degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated in 1991 and won honors for his mock trial work and was elected to the prestigious Order of Barristers.

Sherrie Matula,(http://www.sherriematula.com) I am the Democratic candidate for Texas House of Representatives in District 129, which includes a significant portion of southeast Harris County. I am committed to improving the community's economic health and vitality and will focus my efforts on:

  • Fighting for better public education
  • Tackling environmental concerns impacting quality of life
  • Addressing the skyrocketing cost of living in Texas

  • I am running as the Democratic candidate because in the 33 years that I have lived in this community, we have never had a voice in Austin that truly represents our district on decisions concerning our children, our environment and our community values. It's time for a change.

I will listen to you and I will fight for your interests. I understand the issues impacting our district and I will work with you to develop smart solutions. You want action. I will deliver results. I am the smart choice for Texas.

Look for more information on local candidates coming soon.
